How do I use the TalkBox.Mom Boxes with older kids or teens?

Older kids and teens may not talk through every part of their day the same way younger children do. They may grab their own snack, make their own lunch, or put something away without saying anything at all.

That doesn’t mean the everyday phrases in your TalkBox.Mom Box are too young for them.

The goal is to add the new language to activities they are already doing, even when they wouldn’t normally say the same thing in English.

For example, your teen may not ask you for an apple because they can get one themselves. But while they’re getting an apple, they could ask:

“Do you want an apple?”

Or while they’re in the kitchen, they can use phrases about:

  • getting cups or plates
  • loading or unloading the dishwasher
  • putting food on the table
  • closing the refrigerator
  • getting or offering food
  • cleaning up after eating

They’re already doing the activity. The Practice Session helps them connect the new language to that real-life moment.

Start with phrases that fit their life

You do not need to practice every phrase the first time through a Box.

In Challenge 1 and Challenge 3, look for Suggested First 10 in the app. These are great phrases to start with when you’re deciding what will be most useful for your family.

For Challenge 2, choose foods your older child actually eats, prepares, buys, or could offer someone else.

The best Focus Phrase is one your family can find a reason to use in real life.

These phrases are foundational

Some of the first phrases may feel basic, especially for an older learner. That’s intentional.

Your family will continue building on these patterns as you move through the Boxes and take additional Tours. A simple phrase your teen can use today gives them a foundation for saying more later.

You don’t need to fit every useful phrase into your first Tour. Choose a few, use them, keep moving, and add more the next time through.
